Smart usage of images and photos on your website

Large and high quality images generally take time to load. Research shows that an Internet users spend on average 3 seconds on a new page - if your site is cluttered with images he might be long gone before they even get loaded. Not using images at all would not be recommended in the Tourism industry though as the tourists travel to experience and see new places! The key with image optimisation is to get the right balance between loading time and image quality.

Things to keep in mind when using digitals in the online space

  • Resize your image in an image editing program (such as Photoshop) instead of getting it done through your HTML code- this will load the image much faster as it will not need to first be loaded to its original file size and then be resized every time to the format defined in your webpage code.
  • Use small images (thumbnails) on your webpage that, when clicked, open a new window and load the full size image independently.
  • Use the <alt> and <title> options in the image code - not only will it let the search engines know what the image is about but it will also be displayed while the image loads.

Colours - Web colours are different from Print colours!

Online imagery use the RGB colour mode. This is different from print imagery and photography which use the CMYK colour mode. Keep it in mind when you are thinking about printing your logo designed for the web or thinking about putting your brochures online!
